第31届东京国际电影节组委会于9月25日公布主竞赛单元入围名单，包括两部中国影片在内的16部影片将角逐本届电影节最佳影片金麒麟奖。
入围主竞赛单元的影片涉及历史、移民、惊悚等题材，从来自109个国家和地区的1829部作品中选出，包括中国内地导演刘浩执导，宋佳、朱亚文等主演的《诗人》和中国香港导演陈果的新作《三个丈夫》。
其他入围主竞赛单元的影片还有日本电影《半世界》、英国电影《白乌鸦》以及以色列、比利时、卢森堡等国合拍片《特拉维夫之火》等。
此外，《武林孤儿》《第一次的离别》和《只有大海知道》等3部中国电影同时入围本届电影节“亚洲未来”单元。中国香港动作电影《无双》入围“聚焦世界”单元。中国蒙古族青年女导演德格娜参与制作的《亚洲三面镜2018：旅程》也将在电影节期间展映 。

今年電影節的《香港四重奏II》打破地域界限，加入東南亞導演，由四位亞洲導演拍下他們眼中獨有的香港風情。其中來自泰國的阿彼察邦韋拉斯花古，憑作品《波米叔叔的前世今生》獲康城影展金棕櫚獎；菲律賓導演布里楊文杜沙曾獲2009年康城影展最佳導演獎；此外，來自馬來西亞的何宇恆導演，去年執導的《心魔》助惠英紅奪得香港電影金像獎最佳女主角；香港導演關錦鵬，則為本地影壇的中堅分子，其作品如《胭脂扣》及《阮玲玉》早被譽為華語電影經典。
